Lib Dems make big gains in Blackburn & Darwen8.35.18am BST (GMT +0100) Sat 12th Jun 2004 Blackburn and Darwen Liberal Democrats mad big gains in the local council elections on June 10. They went into the election with 8 seats and made for net gains to end with 12. The Party also showed a big increase in its vote overall and came very close to gaining in extra seats. The Liberal Democrat gains were: Audley - Zamir Khan Corporation Park - Abdul Rehman Higher Croft - Fred Gollop Little Harwood - Salim Sidat Sudell - Roy Davies In addition the independent candidate in Queen's Park Ward, Yusuf Sidat, decided to join the Liberal Democrats. Unfortunately the Party lost 2 seats, one in Shear Brow and one in Shadsworth. Zamir Khan's win in Audley was notable because he unseated the Labour Leader of the Council, Sir Bill Taylor.
