Blackburn with Darwen 3rd year's low Council Tax increase

March 12, 2010 8:51 AM

Blackburn with Darwen have announced that their Council Tax increase for next year will be at 1.9%. This means for the 3rd year running it will be a below inflation increase.

Commenting on the increase Cllr David Foster, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group and Deputy Leader of the Council said," This shows that the ruling administration has been able to keep the promise we made to the electorate that we would have below inflation Council tax increases. This gives us the lowest Council tax rate in East Lancashire, apart from Ribble Valley, despite that the fact that the government continues to underfund us."

The Labour Group put forward an amendment to the budget but the Director of Finance had serious concerns about it. They also were proposing top pull the plug on a Retirement Village proposal that will extend the choice of housing for older people."

The Labour amendment was defeated and the Council agreed the ruling group's proposals.
