New service to prove 'handy' to the borough's elderly and disabled residents.

A new handyperson service launched today by Blackburn with Darwen Council will help elderly and disabled people to live more independently in their own homes.
The service will assist people in the borough aged over-60 or those in receipt of disability living allowance with home improvements and odd jobs around the house.
The Council's team of reliable and well trained handymen can assist with joinery and plumbing repairs, unblocking gutters, fitting and checking smoke alarms, fitting spy holes and security chains and domestic tasks such as putting up shelves and fitting curtain rails.
The service also offers advice on falls prevention and energy efficiency.
It does not include electrical or gas work, gardening or decorating.
The first two hours of the handyperson's time are free, with residents only having to supply or pay for any materials used.
An extra two hours' labour can be paid for at £15 per hour if required.
The service is part of the Decent and Safe Homes service provided by Blackburn with Darwen Council and is available to people who both rent or own their home.
Councillor Salim Lorgat, executive member for housing, said: "I am delighted that we have secured the funding for this valuable service which will provide the help that elderly and disabled people might need to stay safe and independent at home.
"Help will be available for a variety of jobs around the house and for many people this could prove the difference between independent living and them having to move into residential care."
